10 Fun and Therapeutic Activities for Seniors with Dementia
As we age, our cognitive abilities can decline, and for some, this may result in dementia. Dementia is a general term for a decline in cognitive function that can lead to memory loss, difficulty with language and communication, impaired judgment, and changes in mood and behaviour. This can be a difficult and isolating experience for both seniors and their families. However, as occupational therapists, we can offer support and engaging activities to help seniors with dementia maintain their quality of life and independence. We will share 10 fun and therapeutic activities for seniors with dementia that can promote cognitive function, improve mood, and provide a sense of purpose.
Sensory activities: Sensory activities such as tactile stimulation with a variety of textures, aromatherapy with essential oils, and listening to calming music can be relaxing and engaging for seniors with dementia.
Art therapy: Art therapy can be a powerful tool for self-expression and emotional release. Painting, coloring, and drawing can be enjoyable and therapeutic activities for seniors with dementia.
Gardening: Gardening provides physical activity, exposure to nature, and a sense of accomplishment. It can be especially beneficial for seniors with dementia who may have difficulty with other forms of exercise.
Cooking and baking: Cooking and baking activities can provide an opportunity for socialization, cognitive stimulation, and sensory stimulation through smells and tastes.
